BEEF AND LIBERTY at the HAWKSMOOR

Behind these doors in the basement of the old Watney Combe brewery site in Covent Garden you will not only find an amazing selection of 35 day hung beef, grilled bone marrow, beef dripping chips, triple cooked chips, and a mighty fine wine list. For those that like their interior design to be in the "reclaimed style" then the latest addition to the Hawksmoor stable will not fail.

In the early 18th century a number of beef steak clubs began to spring up in London. The most famous of these was - The Sublime Society of Beef Steaks.
Patrons considered themselves to be down-to-earth men of the people and would attend wearing simple clothes and rugged leather boots. They would each wear a ring with a picture of a gridiron and the words 'beef & Liberty'.

A wall of sliding reclaimed doors divide the private dining room from the main hall...

The grilled bone marrow, nearest comparison would be fois gras. Spread a little on your steak instead of mustard... you would be mad not to !
